Top 10 Scars Suggested by: Cherry Brooke Ms. Brooke (famed for winning several prizes for correctly identifying the audio samples on my podcast) has suggested this interesting list. A scar can not only define a character but instantaneously categorise their intentions. For example, there are three main types of scar. The first is the hero scar, unseen and conveniently covered by a shirt until the hero feels he can open up to the heroine/lead female. The second is the hero with a dark past scar, usually found on the cheek or above the eye but always a neat, straight line. The third scar is any other facial scar or 'extreme' mutilation; this segregates the individual as different and therefore evil. 10. Private Trip
"He a weak white boy and beatin' on a nigger make him feel strong" Glory [1989] Portrayed By: Denzel Washington Origin: Evidently from various whippings and beating at the hand of his owner - the film's flogging scene is one of its most powerful and certainly earned Washington his first Oscar. 9. Josey Wales
"Dyin' ain't much of a livin', boy" The Outlaw Josey Wales [1976] Portrayed By: Clint Eastwood Origin: A group of irregular soldiers burn down Josey's house and kill his family - Wales is left for dead after a sabre slash to the face. 8. Scar
"As far as brains go, I got the lion's share but when it comes to brute strength.. I'm afraid I'm at the shallow end of the gene pool" The Lion King [1994] Portrayed By: Jeremy Irons Origin: Never explained - no hints or clues within the film, although it was probably Mufasa's fault. 7. Matt Hooper
"Well, this is not a boat accident! And it wasn't any propeller and it wasn't any coral reef and it wasn't Jack the Ripper! It was a shark!" Jaws [1975] Portrayed By: Richard Dreyfuss Origin: During one particular bonding scene Quint (played by Robert Shaw) and Hooper compare various scars. The last one is located on Hooper's chest and he explains, "Mary Ellen Moffat. She broke my heart." 6. The Joker
"So, I had a beautiful wife, like you, who tells me I worry too much, who tells me I ought to smile more. Who gambles and gets in deep with the sharks. Look at me! One day, they carve her face. And we have no money for surgeries. She can't take it. I just want to see her smile again, I just want her to know that I don't care about the scars" The Dark Knight [2008] Portrayed By: Heath Ledger Origin: Never explained - three separate stories are offered and all seem perfectly credible. 5. Harlen Maguire
"To be paid to do what you love; ain't that the dream?" Road To Perdition [2002] Portrayed By: Jude Law Origin: During a shoot-out between Maguire and Sullivan (played by Tom Hanks), a crystal lamp shatters and sends several tiny shards across the hitman's face. 4. Tyler Durden
"Fuck damnation, man! Fuck redemption! We are God's unwanted children? So be it!" Fight Club [1999] Portrayed By: Brad Pitt Origin: Self-inflicted chemical burn. 3. Harvey Dent / Two-Face
"It's not what I want, it's about what's fair" The Dark Knight [2008] Portrayed By: Aaron Eckhart Origin: Severe burns and scarring caused by exposure to flammable liquid following explosion. 2. Kakihara
"Listen, when you're inflicting pain to someone, don't think about the pain that person is feeling. Just concentrate on how good it feels to be causing someone pain" Koroshiya 1 / Ichi The Killer [2001] Portrayed By: Tadanobu Asano Origin: Although never fully explained, Kakihara is a sadomasochist who has a strange admiration/love for his boss so it was more than likely a self inflicted act of loyalty. 1. Ernst Stavro Blofeld
"I shall look forward to personally exterminating you, Mr. Bond" You Only Live Twice [1967] Portrayed By: Donald Pleasence Origin: Never explained - as it was an afterthought by the make-up division the reason was probably just to make him look sinister. |
