THE RED RIGHT HAND PODCAST PODCAST Episode IV You Know, Jerry. I Think In Order To Be Afraid, You've Got To Have A Heart. I Don't Think I Got One. I Got It Cut Out Of Me A Long Time Ago Introduction MUAHA HA HA HA... HA HA! Good Afternoon kids, time for a Halloween/Bonfire Night special. Why? So I can laugh evilly and play these thunderstorm samples. That's why! MUAHA HA HA HA! Surprisingly enough this month has seen an abundance of comedies, considering this is the time when horror films usually run rampant on our screens. A lot of the feedback sent in praised last month's interview, namely this part: *Sample from Ep3 Interview*. Yeah, thanks, glad to know that my opinions can be so easily undercut by a brutal back-handed slap about the face. You'll be happy to know that due to the amount of emails and high demand, we will have an interview with Mr. Wickham a little later on. And for those that remember, last month I deleted one of my listener’s emails but he kindly sent a new one: 'When you make work this good it makes it harder to hate you... wait, no, it makes it easier!' And that's from Adam. Oh, he's also added a little thing at the bottom here... 'What the fuck is Richard & Steve's podcast about...' No, no no! I'm not reading that. In other news, Paris bloody Hilton is planning to move to London. YOU... YOU FUCKING HARPY! THAT'S MY FUCKING HOME! YOU STAY IN YOUR HOT & SUNNY HELLHOLE IN LOS FUCKING ANGELES AND LEAVE LONDON ALONE! Seriously, if I stroll through Highbury and see her I will fucking stab her. Pressing on, let the nightmare begin. MUAHA HA HA HA HA! Okay, I'll stop with the laughing; promise. *What an excellent day for an exorcism* Review Of October 2008 October has seen sixteen new UK releases. David Hackl *What about friends?* *Well.. a boy's best friend is his mother* New Reviews & Feedback [05-10-08] Igor "Not nearly the best in its genre but certainly an entertaining Halloween release" 7/10 It would appear I am one of the few critics to give this film such high praise - a fact I'm genuinely surprised by. Equally surprising was the amount of flak I was sent by outraged parents... again! Last month's damning Fly Me To The Moon review was subjected to parental scrutiny because I was too harsh and yet this review has accused me of siding with a movie that's unsuitable for young kids. *I was ready to leave after the first fifteen minutes! / The words kill and murder were mentioned more than twenty times! / This was a waste of money and my children's brains! / Read this out on your podcast: this movie sucked! / The innocence of my young kids has been distorted!* - What a bunch of bloody whiners! I stated in my review that it wasn't for young children but you still read it, watched the film and decided to blast me; morons! [07-10-08] The Mutant Chronicles "Largely moronic, two hour long let down" 2/10 Surprisingly enough, I received very little feedback about this release. Almost nobody bothered to write in to defend this piece and few said little more than, 'yeah, Mutant Chronicles was shit' [13-10-08] Burn After Reading "Typically splendid comedic farce" 8/10 As with Igor, I appear to be one of the few critics lavishing this film with praise. If you're a regular reader you will know I harbour a great amount of respect for the Coen brothers and their work but apparently this comedy just didn't hit the right notes with other reviewers. Your emails have all been quite positive, Angie said Angie: This is certainly the Coen's funniest piece since The Big Lebowski, it almost makes up for Intolerable Cruelty - and Bill said pretty much the same thing Bill: I had never seen a Coen brothers film before but I will have to look into their other stuff, Burn After Reading was great! - Then, of course, I received this from Galina Galina: This film should be burned after watching - oh, how very clever - I thought it was an awful sweary mess! - and this similar statement from Adnan Adnan: Stupid hammy performances, bad plots, stupid jokes and way too much violence and swearing! If you took out all the F-Bombs there wouldn’t be any script left! I hate the phrase 'F-Bomb' so this little sample is for you *Fudge* *That's not an F-Bomb* *Fudge you, butt-hole* [19-10-08] Ghost Town "A fairly formulaic and predictable rom-com but still packs a lot of heart and laughs" 6/10 Haven't changed my mind at all here, despite the many emails saying that I was too harsh and that Ricky Gervais was apparently really funny. I was, however, sent this email by RainboChaser RainboChaser: I hated this film! Gervais' character is not likeable and he tries too hard. The jokes aren't funny and the thing is completely predictable. It's not worth anyone's time. I only woke up and laughed once when he made a comment about Chinese people but the rest was crap. I don't understand how anyone could give this movie a positive review. What are they using to bribe the reviewers? Erm... DVDs, mostly. [26-10-08] W. "Interesting character study about a simple man who didn't belong in the Whitehouse but without taking sides, says so little" 7/10 Typically, I received a whole heap of emails about political standpoints and how this film was brilliant but not damning enough or really well done but painted a bad picture of the man; blah blah. My opinions remain unchanged. [27-10-08] Quantum Of Solace "Superb follow-up, successfully exploring the emotional depths of Bond and making the character more entertaining to watch than ever" 8/10 As this hasn't been released in the UK and won't be out in America for some time, I have had no feedback as yet and my opinion remains the same. *Don't cry, I've given your life purpose* Ratings Nights In Rodanthe is another adaptation of a bloody Nicholas Sparks novel. I hate Sparks' writing, I find it saccharine, stupid and a little insulting with its trivialisations of love. Other than The Notebook, the films have followed the exact same course. This is just another example. Thriller, Eagle Eye was also released this month to a largely average reception. I didn't think a great deal either way, I wasn't greatly entertained but wasn't exactly outraged either. Sort of reminded me of Jumper. To be honest, the same could be said for comedies, The House Bunny and How To Lose Friends And Alienate People; disposable middle-of-the-way muddles. *You'll see me in hell, Mr. Thorne. We'll serve out our sentence together* Best & Worst Releases Of The Month 2. The Mutant Chronicles 1. Fly Me To The Moon 2. Quantum Of Solace 1. Burn After Reading *You stay! We belong dead!* Special Feature This month I have two interviews for you; this first one is with a very good friend of mine, currently living in Manchester, Chris Burrows *Brief interview with Chris Burrows* *We're leaving!* *What happened?* *We're leaving now!* And back by popular demand, Mr. Daniel Wickham *Interview with Daniel Wickham about Burn After Reading* *I met this six year old child with this blank, pale, emotionless face and the blackest eyes; the devil's eyes* *Brief interview with Daniel Wickham about Ghost Town* *Hey! I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul! I'll swallow your soul!* *Swallow this!* Coming Soon Coming soon. David Fincher's Curious Case Of Benjamin Button, loosely based on F Scott Fitzgerald's short story is set for a US release date of 25-Dec-08 and although a UK date has yet to be announced, I'm sure it will be around about the same time. We also have the new Edward Zwick production, Defiance, telling the story of three Jewish brothers (Daniel Craig, Liev Schreiber and Jamie Bell) who escape Nazi-occupied Poland and join a bunch of Russian resistance fighters. It's due out in America 12-Dec-08 and a later UK release date of 9-Jan-09. Now, the reason I haven't mentioned Steven Soderbergh epic two-part drama entitled Che (or The Argentine and Guerilla) is simply due to the fact that there's been a lot of fuss made over distribution. I really want to see this film and I've been looking forward to it for many, many months but it finally looks like release dates have been scheduled, so look out for that opening early next year. Speaking of films coming out early 2009, an additional fragment of Watchmen material has been released - still awaiting that one with baited breath. And finally, for any Americans privileged enough to live near a city where this film is actually showing, do go see Repo! The Genetic Opera. It's a fantastic piece that I've been championing for a long time now and am desperate for a UK release! The premise is brilliant, the songs are surprisingly good and the production values exceptional. Lionsgate have permitted me to play a small clip for you, so here it is. *Song montage from Repo!* Already being heralded as this generation's Rocky Horror Picture Show, this film is simply glorious. See it, buy the soundtrack, boost the ratings and box office takings, so that we humble Europeans will get a chance for a cinematic release. *To live, it feeds on Lucy's precious blood; it is a beast, a monster* What I Watched Today There aren't many films based on the failed Parliamentary bombings of 1605 but we do have V For Vendetta *I want this country to realise that we stand on the edge of oblivion. I want every man, woman and child to understand how close we are to chaos. I want everyone to remember why they need us!* One of my favourite graphic novels, one of my favourite comic adaptations and an all-round engrossing flick. Following that I watched Hocus Pocus *We don't get any smokes from you, we don't get any cash. What am I supposed to do with my afternoon?* *Maybe you could learn to breathe through your nose* Yeah, not overly proud of that, but I was nine when it came out and it fills me with a nostalgic seasonal feeling. So fuck you. Finally I also watched the astoundingly brilliant, Eastern Promises *Tell him what I said* *Tell him what!? Slaves give birth to slaves* and Glengarry Glen Ross *What's your name?* *Fuck you! That's my name! You know why, mister? 'Cause you drove a Hyundai to get here tonight, I drove an eighty thousand dollar BMW. That's my name!* Both sterling cinematic achievements. *I'm not going to kill you. Your job will be to tell the rest of them that death is coming for them, tonight. Tell them.. Eric Draven sends his regards* Outro To any Americans trying to keep up with the general election issues intent on voting next week... AHA HA HA HA HA! And my highest congratulations to CherryBrooke56 as she managed to correctly identify all the samples used in Episode 3 (even the opening title quote). So a hearty 'well done' to you. Good luck this month listeners and remember, you will be rewarded a dreadful mystery prize for naming every sample used. With that said, all that remains is for me to close this month's podcast, thank all of you for listening and ask that you continue to stay loyal to the site. I heavily insist you tune in next month for more cinematic dronings in my Christmas special. Happy viewing, kids.
