2007

Notable Individuals

THE EXCEPTIONAL

1 - There Will Be Blood
Daniel Day-Lewis delivers another powerful, emotionally draining performance in this absolutely sterling character study
2 - Atonement
If there's one thing the British do well, it's a wartime love story. Atonement is no exception; one of the most beautifully executed, tender pieces in recent years and certainly the highlight of 2007
3 - 3:10 To Yuma
The Western's resurrection piece and one of the only remakes (bar The Maltese Falcon) to surpass its predecessor
4 - Eastern Promises
David Chronenberg's finest film; a true and gritty portrayal of the Russian mafia's presence in London
Das Leben Der Anderen [The Lives Of Others]
Exceptionally delivered, touching analysis of GDR history, rife with paranoia, espionage and betrayal
6 - The Assassination Of Jesse James By The Coward Robert Ford
7 - Letters From Iwo Jima
8 - 300
9 - Sunshine
10 - Blood Diamond

THE MOST UNDER-RATED FILM OF 2007

The Darjeeling Limited
One of Wes Anderson's finest pieces that dipped in-and-out of cinemas far too quickly

THE INUTILE

1 - Epic Movie
The fact that it's offensive and stupid doesn't quite tip me over the edge, it's the fact that the production looks good and a truly great parody was written off for fart and sex jokes; that and half the films they focused on couldn’t be classed as epic movies. Epic Movie represents the absolute low of 2007
2 - Norbit
The piece of racist, weightist crap that cost Eddie Murphy his Oscar. The story is terrible, the laughs are non-existent and the cast should hang their multi-award winning heads in shame
3 - Bratz
Tacky, disposable, predictable and largely unbearable tripe about girls in high school... but I clearly remember high school and it could not be further from this drivel - just to clarify, I'm not implying I have memories of being a girl in high school
4 - I Know Who Killed Me
Lindsay Lohan went from promising kid actor to tramp in no time and I sat with baited breath, well aware that she would make a movie about being a stripper sooner-or-later. However, I wasn't convinced it would be this dire.
5 - The Number 23
Jim Carrey's performance is the only thing that carries a plot device which feels so pointless and wasted

THE MOST OVER-RATED FILM OF 2007

Shrek The Third
A cash-in, nothing more, nothing less
