THE CABINET OF DR. CALIGARI

Robert Wiene

*****
5/5
Like the great Russian director Sergei Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin, this venerable silent classic changed the way movies were made and appreciated. Adapting techniques from the German theatrical style known as expressionism, it explores the world and mind of a psychotic fairground showman who hypnotises a sleepwalker to commit a murder for him. However, the sleepwalker abducts the intended victim instead. The use of lopsided sets, odd camera angles and general weirdness caused a sensation at the time, and still look amazing — hence the five stars.
